Political Blog

S.C. Rudegan whose articles I have posted here in the past now has his own blog in which he speaks his truth based on facts to the people of the Crowsnest Pass, with respect to our many issues here.

With a municipal election upon us the timing could not be more perfect for I’m sure all residents and voters want to know as much as they can about CROWSNEST CLAIMS VS. FACTS.

UPDATE: 2:44 pm

A commenter here has just pointed out that there seems to be some confusion here as to S.C. RudeGAN whose articles I have printed here on this blog previously, and S.C. RudeGON whose blog CROWSNEST CLAIMS VS. FACTS I am writing about here on this post?

If anyone can clear this up for us it would be appreciated. Thanks!

John, are you sure it is Rurgen? Perhaps you are being used here by someone.

Yes, you are right. The last name on this blog has a different spelling than the one in my previous posts? Will have to look into this. In the meantime I will now change the spelling to accurately reflect what is on the blog.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Hi John, someone is pranking the Crowsnest Pass. Someone who does not want to give their name wants to wage a contest of FACTS. Don’t you find it strange?

  4. Anonymous says:

Hope Mr. Ward takes a look.

I posted this at Dean’s, but since you’re doing a topic on it:

    “Strategic Action Plan
Sept 16/2013 – Dean Ward in press release to Pass Herald:
‘The strategic plan of 2011 was put together by a group of people that do not live in the Crowsnest Pass…the public was never given the opportunity to be a part of this plan.’
The 2012-2014 Community Strategic Action Plan was put together by…referencing the previous council strategic plan…input from community groups (including volunteer boards, Community Futures, and the Chamber of Commerce), material presented by the Mayor’s Task Force on the Economy, and feedback from the public…two public forums were held…the Mayor’s Task Force presentation… and a town hall meeting.”

The public forums were not for public input, they were presentations AFTER everything was finalized.

There was input from invited business and special interest groups at closed-to-the-public meetings. They got to see the Plan weeks before it was grandly revealed to the public. Is that Rudegon’s idea of “public input”?

Abiocon Strategies was paid for something – if they did not “put together” the Strategic Plan, what were they paid for?

I can’t ask Rudegon since she has not enabled comments.

  6. Anonymous says:

In the Herald it’s “S.C. RUDEGAN” (but they spell it “RUTIGAN” on the main page).

They are already doing this on FB with Lisa Sygutek leading the smear campaign (surprise? Not really!) saying its all propaganda. When they say something its the truth when others say it its propaganda. I’m thinking S.C. (whatever) speaks more truth than they do.

3:11 pm “Input from Community groups (including volunteer board (Community Futures) Community Futures is not a volunteer Board like you assume and would like the public to believe. These people are chosen from a secret pool that only the one with strings attached to the management or to a politician allow to participate. A normal volunteer Board is picked at an open Public meeting where every resident of the Public in the Municipality can participate, here that is not happening. WHY? If this is not misleading the PUBLIC I like to know what is? Call Bill or Shar and have them explain???? What is behind that CLOSED SHOP ATTITUDE….???? Some of these directors have been on the board for decades. How would this be possible if at publicized annual AGM’s open to the public real elections were taking place? Because none of this happens its all a sham to ensure a select group maintains control over their thing at the taxpayer expense.

  16. Anonymous says:

6:15, do you think we could go to the government with this issue, or John could you answer. It is totally bogus what is going on with CF.

  17. John Prince says:

Bill Kovach himself at the candidates forum said that former Mayor John Irwin was on this board since its inception in 1988 with others themselves being on it for decades too. It’s an exclusive ‘old boys club’ playing monopoly with taxpayer money. In the last few years Bill is now one of the players and Shar is his employee manager. These people want seats on council and they want naive Blair as their mayor. That’s three votes, all they will need is one more and they rule the roast here in the Pass. Blair’s campaign manager is a Realtor and he himself is a building materials supplier. The potential shenanigans that could go on here if these people all get in, is unbelievable. God help us all!

p.s. In my opinion, S.C. Rudegon is right on the money with a lot of what he says on his blog, especially about Bill and taxes and his real motives using the Ratepayers to achieve his ends.

  18. Anonymous says:

6:28 “Do you think we could go to the government with this” What gov. they are the one’s that created this pile of manure. What would you ask them? But I can tell you they only pay attention to ELECTED people. They will protect them or they will help them, that’s how it works. Right or wrong or common sense is not where its at anymore. POWER and MONEY, that’s where it is at with these people. The politicians above have to respect you as a local Politician because that’s where the votes are when their turn comes up.

If we ever needed to vote for JOHN, its now. With that Report and Bill and Shar in there we will never see daylight. Please I am begging you to inform yourself and make the correct choice.

“Please sir (S.C. Rudegon) I want more.”

    Yes, give us more!!!

  20. Anonymous says:

Yes, we have a Rudegon hiding behind a false name to give us the FACTS. Don’t you think this strange John? Ward and Gallant put their names on their facts. Fact: municipality paid $50,000 to the Best Western to reserve a name for a private company. Clarification, they did not pay it directly to the private company, unless you think Best Western is a private company. In any case, the only way you will get this $50, 000 if Best Western gives it back, not if you sell the land. What are they inhaling? The fact is Brian orchestrated by invitation only introduction of a community logo. That is a FACT.

  21. Doomsayer says:

    Can we trust the media?

Any media source, be it print, visual, internet or jungle drums has one major flaw. It comes down to the personal interpretation of the person posting it, regardless of how factual they want or purport it to be. Each person’s view of an event is subject to proximity to the event, professional, personal & religious views, direct or indirect input from other parties to mention only a few factors. Social media such as Twitter & Facebook are a whole different problem, almost everything posted there is subject to personal or emotional factors, and actual factual detail of any situation is almost non-existent.

So can we trust S.C. Rudegon’s facts? In reading his blog, I see a very biased twist, a very skill-full blending of excerpted details from statements, posts & reports to present his “facts”. To begin with, his “facts for “Consultants”, “Traffic Fines” & “Accountability” essentially to me read as an endorsement of the current council. Much of the postings appear to give slanted details targeting specific persons. His claim that “he and his family are quite possibly the largest private landowners” referring to Kovach indicates that he hasn’t dug deep enough, I can think of 2 or 3 others that have as much or more property.

As John has said many times, lately with even more vigor, “Do Your Own Damn Homework!!” Do not depend on a few posts, blogs, newsletters or the neighbours “he said – she said” to inform yourselves. The information is out there, take a few hours to start digging. Don’t take mine, John’s, Dean’s, Rudegon’s or anyone else’s views as gospel, form your own. This community’s problems are caused in main part by people just sitting back & letting a few scam artists with a slick patter lead us down the garden path.

Stop being sheeple, it’s time to let the inner wolf out.

“Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.”

And to take it even further, light bulb here.

What happened was that this last mayor and council got in overwhelmingly because enough people were sick of these shananigans.
The last council could not be controlled and obviously a lot of people around here did not like that. So they “the ratepayers” was set up to try to get to that point again.

  24. Anonymous says:

I do not understand why Bill Kovach is so determined to get control of everything in the Pass. How much more money does he need to take from our Municipality where we can’t even pay our taxes because of high cost and then get penalized to boot. And this money is just to line his coffin. The majority of us ask Bill please live and let live, don’t take it all. Even if you acquired the whole PASS before you croak don’t think for a second that your conscience will not catch-up with you and tell you you should have known better. From a friend that hopes you face reality. I would not say this to your face you would probably hire a hit man to kick the crap out of me.

  25. John Prince says:

As usual, insightful commentary filled with logic and reason.

With respect to media. I am willing to bet (based on past experiences) when the 300-400 people who attended the mayors forum read this week’s Pass Herald they’ll be thinking how could their eyes and ears deceive them from what the Herald has to say vs what they thought they saw and heard.

btw/ you won’t find my answers to the Herald’s Q&A as I was given less than 48 hrs (what gives with that, hey?) to respond and had to decide between preparing for the forum or answering their Q&A. I obviously chose the former.

With respect to trust, my favourite one on this subject is the exchange between King Herod of Judea and Caesar Claudius.

Herod [to Claudius]: Trust no one, my friend, no one. Not your most grateful freedman. Not your most intimate friend. Not your dearest child. Not the wife of your bosom. Trust no one.

Claudius [to Herod]: Not even you?

Do you people or should I say sheeple not see that we are at the door of the slaughter house?? The goverment has infilterated every small medium and large community, by placing organizations like Community Futures and the likes includind the Chamber of Commerce, to regulate and work behind the scenes for the good of the Elite, not the people. Is there anyone who belongs to these organizations that is middle class or poor?? NO, They are the priviledged the very rich and in their minds the powerfull. They are a cancer in our midst and devouer and feed on us every chance they get. We better not make any mistakes when we vote this time or the slaughter house doors will swing open and we will be led in like animals or as some call us the useless eaters, who they must get rid of. We must vote for people that will stand up to these rich and powerfull, because THEY DO NOT work for the people only for themselves which has been prooven over and over again. John I hope you win you are our David standing up to Goliath.

To anonymous about Bruce’s comment on American Ad.
Go to You tube videos type in Crowsnest Pass Council and you will hear the secret meeting of council and Bruce determining the branding subject and saying that it must be kept totally secret and gave the topic to Brian. Open your eyes. This council has been ruled by Decoux and the council has done exactly as he purports they do with no one with enough guts to do otherwise. Decoux Do as I say…not as I do.

So, you would rather have Painter as Mayor, Kovach running the show, and a realtor pulling the strings?
It was plain to see at the last Forum…Kovach asking puffball questions of Painter, just to show who is boss, and Pundyk starting the applause to cut everyone off except Painter, when their time was up.

  29. Anonymous says:

Decoux and HIS councillors say they are a policy driven government. They had put out a Request for Proposals for a hotel, at the CLC site, in which they stipulated only developers with proven resources need to apply. This is a good policy with respect to public assets.

After they made this policy, they proceeded to do an expensive, $8,000 just for the lawyers; deal with Medican which, everyone was aware, had NO RESOURCES. That deal predictably crushed.

Again, disregarding its own policy regarding the Request for Proposal, our council led by Decoux, put up $50,000 of taxpayers’ money to reserve a hotel brand for a non-existent developer.

Councillors were told a fairly tale that the $50,000 will be recouped when the land is sold and they bought this argument. This is absurd, why would any experienced developer give extra $50,000 just because you made a goofy decision? We simply get $50,000 less for the land if this is the case.

Now we read with interest that the blame for the waste of the $50,000 is being passed on to some kind a board, the money was spent on the recommendation of “Economic Development Board as a prudent measure.” Note the misuse of the word prudent.

There is a pattern here of not accepting responsibility. No need to talk of accountability. All of us would like to see a nice hotel there, but most of don’t want our precious tax dollars going down the drain. The fact is, too much money was wasted on goofy things while important things, like our roads and the seniors lodge, have been neglected.
This is not a policy driven behaviour, this is not even common sense driven behaviour.

  30. Anonymous says:

Anon Oct 14@ 8:37am, Quite a hatchet job on Bill Kovach. Totally crap. The Kovach family has owned that land for many years and has sold some it off or passed it on to the kids. Where do you get the info that Bill will personally financially gain from being a councillor, and where is your proof that he or friends personally gain from the CF program.

Some of CF money may make its way into questionable projects, but without an accounting and list who knows. Several local businesses have benfited from loans from CF. I suspect a lot of the money for the various Heritage projects comes from the provincial government, and that Fred Bradley has an influence here. For example the Leitch Collieries monument is really a bathroom, lunch and dog walking spot and cannot be justified.

I’m sure that Kovach and Bradley talk, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had a hand in selecting Painter for mayor candidate. But I don’t know that nor do I care. ANYBODY could run for mayor if he/she meets the requirements for that position. We have a mayor now who filled that bill.

So rather than take your wrath out on a person who has volunteered more than most people in the Crowsmest, get off you ass and go out and make some money and buy up Kovach’s land. Then we can talk about you like that.

In closing, you call yourself a friend of Bill? Well, with friends like you Bill doesn’t need enemies. You talk about a hit man– you are really a first class a**hole.

Do any of you people want to guess where all this so called fact sheet is coming from, this is straight from the municipal office. Do you think that the present CAO and our present CFO want to have people up there that might actually question them. Those people may not be on the ballot but their jobs now will depend on a whole crew of new people that have read the farmer report, maybe someone the was singled out many times in that report dosent want any scrutiny, think -CFO-.

  32. Anonymous says:

Anon Oct 14@9:12 AM. So why do t you get YOUR people together and form a group which get organized and have a voice. What is stopping you?

To assume that everyone who belongs to the Chamber of Commerce is an elitist is total crap. Many people in the groups you mention are indeed ordinary people who got off their asses and worked for what they have. If any had money handed down to them, they still had to keep it. I doubt it is the elite who feed off of you, rather it is you who feeds off of the government who is funded by these elitists. Your taxes sure wouldn’t pay for what you receive. Get real.

You also have to make your own breaks and spending your time criticizing these elitists instead of improving your lot means you won’t get out of your present status in life. Whose fault is that. This continuous whining about the elites is getting old, and if I were John I wouldn’t want you as my supporter as your spout your dribble.

  33. John Prince says:

    For the record:
I am getting sick and tired of hearing about the $50K and that a hotel (Best Western) will be going up on the CLC site, or any other site in the Crowsnest Pass.

That ain’t going to happen. I speak now as one whose educational and career experience of over 20 years was in the hospitality industry, specifically hotels (I could probably teach Vachon a thing or two about the hotel business). The $50K is lost and until the stagnant economic situation and population decline are reversed here, for example mines opening up here in a few years employing hundreds of people you won’t be seeing any new hotels for the simple reason that can be explained in two words. It ain’t “economically viable” to build a hotel here at the present time, or even into the foreseeable future.

The CLC site needs a rethink as to what useful commercial/residential purpose it can serve other than a pipe dream hotel development. I believe Crowsnest Opportunity Development Cooperative and CF can play a role here, and if elected I will proactively work with these groups to achieve those ends.

    Anon @10:35
Totally agree with you the C of C is ^not an elitist organization but an organization where individual meritocracy is showcased. These people come from all walks of life and have earned and deserve our respect for being the builders of our community.

  36. Anonymous says:

Just a statement on the moving of money between budgets. In the Municipal world there is a need to sometimes move money from budget to budget. Maybe for an extraordinary expense, a project, something that comes up well into the budget year that was not budgeted for but deemed by Council to be important. Council directs the CFO to find the money in the budget and there is a Motion approving the expenditure. If it was not taken from unspent dollars in other budgets then where?? Maybe Reserves or maybe long term debt? Something that would need to be made up in subsequent years from the tax base? Remember the old saying, “Pay now or Pay later”

Exactly, it is the content of the Facts which is not factual. It tries to confuse the issue, but only in a very crude way.

For example: Engineering consultants are not P.R. consultants! Do you think the people in the Crowsnest Pass can’t figure out the difference?

Bruce is way too extravagant on his need for consulting services which have nothing to do with engineering, and the people know the difference.

How can you “prudently” advise Council to flush $50,000 down the drain? You are digging a hole at the CLC and claiming a hotel is coming, knowing full well there is no hotel coming. How can you spin this into a fact?

Next thing you will claim Bruce brought us the mining proposal, knowing full well he had nothing to do with it. How are you going to make a fact out of this without spinning the yarn even deeper? This is very transparent attempt to twist the facts.
