What people are saying… "We don’t trust you no more"

Trust

Trust you no more

By way of petition and word on the street the community has spoken… “We don’t trust you no more”… is what they are saying.

Mayor, council and administration have lost the trust of the people… and yet they are still there? Have they no shame, no honour? What is their justification for remaining in office these elected officials of ours when no longer having the moral support of the people?

What makes them any different than the despots in the middle east who in the last couple of years have had their citizens rise up en mass in protest to how they managed things. Are our citizens rights and demands any different? Do we too not have rulers who refuse to govern as we ask, and failing to do so, to leave after being told their services are no longer wanted or required?

In the States they have recall and everyone from mayor, councils, congressmen and senators are subject to it. Here we have a petition to a Minister that can easily be ignored by his higher level of government, more despotic and tyrannical it seems than the one below.

What are citizens to do? Doomsayer says, “rise up and fight”. Others say, “do nothing and wait for the next election”. I say, “there is something wrong with our system when people have no recourse but to fight or play dead”.

When leaders loose moral authority to govern with no recourse to change things then there is no democracy, there is only tyranny by the few over the many.

When a mayor and council can simply ignore a petition signed by a majority of electors without so much as an open debate in council, or a public debate in a Town Hall meeting, then something more is required to get their and their masters attention.

That something usually means civil disobedience. If the Minister chooses to ignore our petition, or play games, then that ultimately might be our last recourse. Unless, of course, residents here choose to play dead?

“Humans are endowed to a higher degree than animals of any other species with two precious faculties – the power to think and the desire to rebel.”

What say you, good citizens of the Pass? Will you play dead, or will you fight!

The duty of a patriot is to protect his country (municipality) from its government.

The Mayor, council and administration do not care what the citizens of CNP need or wish to have in their community. This should be blatantly obvious to even the supporters. The future of the CNP has been designed thus far by outsiders who have been handsomely paid with your tax dollars. Why did you bother with a pesky election when those elected are unable to govern without expensive help. I wonder how far the supporters are willing to go to pay for all the wonderful changes in the CNP. Take care.

Did not the mayor in June say we would have more Town Hall meetings? Well?? Where are they? When’s the next one? 3 or 4 a year he said… is he ducking out of these like he ducked out of Remembrance Day ceremonies?

  3. Jose says:

In the Federal Government, it is the Mandarins, the high level bureaucrats one or two steps below the Minister, that hold the power. The elected officials come and go, while these Mandarins remain in place and hold the cards, budget info and ultimately the power. It gets interesting when there is a change of government.

In the future, it will be the same in the Crowsnest it appears. The Mayor and Coucillors will come and go, while the senior Administration sits there with the power.

When the present CAO decided not to fire or discipline the Director for his unacceptable behavior with the Reporter regarding the house fire, it shows that this Mayor and Councillors are irrelevant. They will be gooone in a few months, and may or may not advance their ambitious expensive remake of the Crowsnest in the time remaining.

It’s the CAO that we should be worried about. He will stick around until his travel schedule gets the best of him, or another job shows up closer to home. He was entrenched by the Interim CAO Consultant with the apparent assistance of the Mayor, in order to advance the Fire Department makeover at least. His power base is set, it appears. Hope I’m wrong about this part.

Yes, one can mount a civil disobedience program, but it will only tear the Crowsnest Pass further apart. If it does happen, I wouldn’t set the table for the Disobedience Meeting with too many chairs. That’s just not the Crowsnest Pass ( you’ll have to import the Quebec students to help you with this). That’s my take.

The fact that the Petitiion was signed by many many people will mean that the next time around, the Election will be different. People will look at the process much closer, and will pay more attention to the candidates’ platforms.

Jose, a little house cleaning will be in order, hopefully not too much. Don’t put too much blame on the administration, they are doing what they have been told to do.

Rumour also has it that your crytstal ball was bought in a second hand shop on 20th Ave. Facts are nice; if you are right, I regress. Quebecor is not dumping regional at this point.

From observing what has been going on in this community, one thing has become abundantly clear. Some people are not happy unless they are unhappy. How very sad.

  8. Anonymous says:

Yes, and then there is you and our local municipal government that live in a state of denial.

They speak, see & hear nothing of a community crisis. How very sad! :-(

  9. Anonymous says:

I think that a lot of you naysayers are the ones in total denial. Wake up, and see that there is a world out there that exists outside the CNP. You can’t live in this sleepy hollow forever, and not have things change. Do you want to survive, for our children and grandchildren, or have a ghost town full of people who want things to stay the same forever?

    It simply can’t happen.

  10. The Doomsayer says:

Whaall, I reckon that there mayor feller done got isself a heap o’ learnin when he went up to da big city. He’s a gonna edumacate us’uns, on account we’uns is jest poor no-count hill folk an don’t got much in da way o’ larnin!

Gee, if the mayor council & assorted flunkies want to treat us as uneducated mountain folk, we might as well act like it, right? Bullshet!

If there is one thing & one thing only that I have learned about the residents of the Crowsnest Pass, it is that they like things as they are. Is this a bad thing?

HECK NO!! Have our volunteer firemen ever failed to put out a fire with their out-moded experience? HECK NO! Have any of our volunteer boards ever NOT done the best they could with their out-moded way of doing things? HECK NO! And the list can go on.

Things work here, maybe not in the fashion expected of the 21st century, but they work. We love our laid back lifestyle, the fact when we walk down the street we know, for better or worse, every 2nd or 3rd person, the fact that the great outdoors is literally our backyard & the fact that we can live & work in a place we actually enjoy.

Do I advocate fighting? Absolutely!! If you truly love something, you will go to the bitter end for it, if you don’t, then get the heck out!

  12. Anonymous says:

I’m so sick of hearing that we don’t want change in the Pass. That has nothing to do with what’s going on. Change is welcomed here, unless it’s change that isn’t a good change. And what they are jamming down our throats is NOT good for the Pass, not all of it anyway. We have a frugal budget because times are not prosperous here right now. Council is spending like crazy. They are putting us in debt to have these things that we don’t need right now. They are taking away anything that made us money or saved us money and replacing it with things that cost. We want change dammit, but we don’t want to lose the cost effective measures we took years to build here. Why don’t they CHANGE their way of thinking and just listen to what the people they represent want? There is a happy medium out there and it’s easy to see, if only they’d open their ears and listen.

Just mass emailed mayor and council calling for their resignations using email addresses above. I’m sure they’re resignations will be forthcoming. After all, they do claim to be working for the best interests of the people. Right now, they’re resignations would be in the best interest of the people.

I can not beleive that you guys do not trust council. I trust council will do even more things in the CNP that will make us great. A big fancy hotel, a manufacturing plant that comes with 70 good paying jobs, shortly after that a big company will show up with 700 great jobs.Maybe after all this happens you guys will trust them and we can all get together for a good chuckle at our new 5000 seat arena at the lakes.

  19. Here is some interesting information the village of Boyle in 2008 had a number of problems including a dispute between the village and the chief of its volunteer fire department. Who was relived of his duties, in response the community started a petition that went to municipal affairs. The petition did not have enough signatures but Municipal affairs still saw the need to send somebody in to look at the operations of the community. They sent in Russell Farmer and Associates who found the following:
    Council Operations
A number of issues were identified with the operation of the current Council. During the
inspection we identified the following key issues with Council operations.
    • In many cases where a decision was required between Council meetings, the CAO
acted on the direction of council outside of council sessions. As a result, decisions
were being made without the opportunity for an unbiased and transparent public
debate within Council and without a motion of Council. The CAO is not making
appropriate use of special meetings in cases where critical decisions need to be made
outside of regularly scheduled Council meetings.
    • The CAO has asked administration to revise motions of Council in Council minutes
after they had been reviewed and adopted by Council.
    • Administration is not tracking the status of resolutions passed by Council. 4 | P a g e
    • Bylaw #03-09 was passed by Council, signed by the CAO but not signed by the
Mayor before the bylaw was enacted. This is a significant issue because the bylaw is
the village’s property tax bylaw and property tax notices were sent to residents before
the bylaw had been signed and thus enacted.
    • Council has not developed a strategic plan since 2007 and the 2007 strategic plan
does not include enough information to guide administration or Council.
    • Council has not conducted a performance review of the CAO since September of
    2007.
    • The management of the volunteer fire department demonstrates poor governance,
human resources and financial management practices. These poor practices by
council and administration resulted in the resignation of all members of the volunteer
fire department and the loss of $111,000 by the Village.

Amazing out history repeats itself, you can review the full report at

  23. Anonymous says:

actually 11:48, they have everything to do with why the emails bounced. you obviously got your spelling from the addresses listed, which is incorrect. based on the functionality of email, you have to have the address spelled correctly. asage@crowsnestpass.com doesn’t exist but asaje@crowsnestpass.com does.

I was at a Town Hall meeting not too long ago, when two young people stood up and addressed the issue of bullying. Everyone was appalled, and saying that this behaviour has to stop. None disagreed. Well, do you know what? I see this kind of childish school yard bullying happening with some adults in this community towards a Council that they themselves elected. What kind of example is being set here, when the adults are behaving like children. Somehow the kids have figured it out for themselves.

I see citizens demanding from our public servants (NOT masters) the accountability and transparency in the decision-making process that they promised in their election campaigns.

Okay then, we don’t have a Council at all, and everyone can run this place from a couple of blogs. Scary thought. Get real!

Here’s a thought – when we elect the next council – let’s have everyone pre-sign the petition to remove them! Whatever reason we come up with can be filled in later!

If you don’t understand the above quote, have someone of real intelligence explain it to you. Regardless of whether you are pro or con on these issues, constructive comments or criticism is what we need, not stupidity.

  35. Peter Rosner says:

Anon 9:54 I can see your point as well as the last few comments here. Yes some of us are being very vocal about what this council is doing. I know that i am expressing myself in a tone that is not acceptable to others. In most circumstances i dont deal with people in this manner but this council has really pushed things too far. Believe me i am not a bully, cant stand them and have stood up to them all my life. It looks like right now the bullies are on council and in administration.

Great idea, when you cast your ballot in the next election, pre sign the petition at the same time to get rid of the person you just voted for.

  37. Anonymous says:

John, it seems like your blog has been infested with a councillor or two (or their supporters) acting as trolls here trying to protect council while lambasting as fools those in the thousands who signed the petition. What do these people not understand about ‘majority’ rules? As someone has already stated, “they are our servants not our masters”.

  42. Jose says:

MESSAGE TO THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL: There are servants and there are “public servants”. We do not have servants here. We do have paid “public servants” as in the Administration and Municipal Staff. They may not consider themselves to be this, but they are. They are well compensated for the duties they carry out, pensions and benifits included. Just ask a person in private industry about this.

I am not sure what the “elected officials” are. Hats off to them for taking on the task. Yes, they may get a stipend, but the pay does not make up for the work they do, and in this present situation, for the criticism that they are receiving. Do they deserve this? Some people think so, including me.

That said, one must ask why the present Mayor and Council are pigheadedly forging ahead without involving the Ratepayers and other interested citizens in the process, They are committing the tax payers to ever increasing expenses, without regard for how these will be paid for. Most people do not appear to be against change, but they sure are against “change at all cost”, or “damn the cost and pass the check book”.

Participatory democracy is needed in this instance. In lieu of cooperation between the parties, Peter Rosner and Doomsayer (and several others) are trying to do this with their posts, because the Mayor and Council refuse to reach out. A sad commentary that it has come to this, where one snip is countered by another snip, as things escalate into the ridiculous.

So……. It is time for the Mayor and Council to call a meeting with these groups and attempt to get things back on the right track. If they think that there is only one way — theirs — then we are lost, and this Gong Show will continue until the community is ripped apart.

Mr. Mayor and Councillors, it is up to you.
