Waking Life – Self Destructive Man

A man shuffles through a dream meeting various people and discussing the meanings and purposes of the universe.

A self-destructive man feels completely alienated, utterly alone. He’s an outsider to the human community. He thinks to himself, “I must be insane.” What he fails to realize is that society has, just as he does, a vested interest in considerable losses and catastrophes.

“A self-destructive man feels completely alienated, utterly alone. He’s an outsider to the human community. He thinks to himself, “I must be insane.” What he fails to realize is that society has, just as he does, a vested interest in considerable losses and catastrophes. These wars, famines, floods and quakes meet well-defined needs. Man wants chaos. In fact, he has to have it. Depression, strife, riots, murder – all this dread. We’re irresistibly drawn to that almost orgiastic state created out of death and destruction. It’s in all of us. We revel in it. Sure, the media tries to put a sad face on these things and paints them up as great human tragedies. But we all know the function of the media has never been to eliminate the evils of the world – no! Their job is to persuade us to accept those evils and get used to living with them. The powers that be want us to be passive observers, and they haven’t given us any other options outside the occasional, purely symbolic, participatory act of voting. “You want the puppet on the right or the puppet on the left?”

I feel that the time has come to project my own inadequacies and dissatisfactions into the sociopolitical and scientific schemes, let my own lack of a voice be heard.”

But we all know the function of the media has never been to eliminate the evils of the world – no! Their job is to persuade us to accept those evils and get used to living with them.

As a character in the movie Waking Life puts it, “We all know the function of the media has never been to eliminate the evils of the world, no! Their job is to persuade us to accept those evils and get used to living with them. The powers that be want us to be passive observers.”

This normalization keeps the firewood of revolution perpetually damp. If nobody understands how horrifically abusive the empire is or sees how profoundly unacceptable it is to live under the thumb of murderous tyrants who want to rule the world, forceful demands for meaningful change will never show up. You can continually quash the spirit revolution before it starts, just by setting up an information environment in which people don’t recognize the need for revolution.

It is only because of the limits of human perception that these efforts are successful. If we were capable of taking in all information all around the world all at once, nobody would have any confusion about which power structure is doing the most killing, exploiting, abusing and oppressing in the world. If we were capable of always looking at things with fresh eyes, efforts to habituate us to the abuses of the global bully that is the US-centralized empire wouldn’t work. We would always hold an acute awareness of the horrifying depravity of the power structure we live under….

Review

One of the most thought provoking, weirdest and most impactful film I have seen, not just in the animated films category, not just that the animation department has done such a great job, but the philosophies and the ideas this film’s genius ignites and shares, is commendable! I loved the writing, the artwork and this is surely a ‘My’ kind of film as I was surprised to relate to the talks so much well and can grasp, for the most part, where the creator of this unique art piece is heading towards. The characters looked realistic, and I enjoyed this concept so much that it’s almost like a living experience to me, a parallel world kind of experience I haven’t got any where but from this movie. An art work to relish! Wonderful to see this was released in 2001 but no wonder to know it underperformed at the box office, damn its a heavy thing to be digested and further more, appreciated by everyone.
